The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, has invited applications for the PhD program in Clinical Psychology for the academic year 2025-26.

Method of Selection

Selection in the AIIMS’s PhD Clinical Psychology Program will be through 3 stages:

Stage I & II — Written Examination (70 Marks)

  • Stage I (30 Questions – 1 Mark Each): Aptitude Test (MCQs) covering English, Biostatistics, Research Methodology, Cell Biology, Lab Technology, etc.
  • Stage II (40 Questions – 1 Mark Each): Subject-related theory-based Questions (MCQs) from MD/MS/MDS/M.Sc. level)
  • Eligibility for Stage III: Candidate Must Score ≥35 marks (combined)

Special Weightage (10 Marks)

Candidates who meet the following criteria will receive an additional 10 marks on their total score from Stages I and II:

A. Medical/Dental/Nursing candidates

  • Eligible for Stage III AND holding MBBS/BDS/MDS/DNB/MD/MS/DM/M.Ch. or M.Sc. (Nursing)

B. Non-Medical candidates

  • Eligible for Stage III AND qualified in one of these fellowships (between July 2023 – July 2025, tenable at AIIMS):
    • CSIR-UGC NET (JRF)
    • ICMR-JRF
    • DBT-JRF
    • NBHM Screening Test
  • Must upload the award letter (exam result alone is not valid).

Note: AIIMS will upload a list of valid fellowship award letters before Stage I & II results. Candidates must resolve discrepancies within the given time.

Stage III — Departmental Assessment (20 Marks)

The institute shortlists candidates in a ratio of three times the advertised seats in each department, based on their combined scores from Stage I, Stage II, and the applicable special weightage. These shortlisted candidates then appear for a departmental clinical/practical/laboratory-based assessment (20 marks), which is added to their earlier scores to calculate the final total.

Final Result

  • Based on Stage I + II + Weightage + Stage III = 100 marks
  • Must secure ≥50% overall (50/100) to qualify
  • If the weightage documents are later found invalid, the marks will be withdrawn and the result will be recalculated.

Eligibility Criteria

General PhD eligibility is broader, but for this program, AIIMS only accepts MPhil Clinical Psychology from a recognised institute/university (2 years, regular mode).

Distance learning degrees are not accepted and equivalence claims for unlisted degrees will not be entertained. The upper age limit for admission is 35 years.

Course Duration, Extensions & Number of Seats

  • Minimum Duration: 3 Years (from Registration to Thesis submission)
  • Maximum Duration: 5 Years
  • Extensions
    • Up to 5 years 6 months: Possible with Dean Committee recommendation + Dean/Director approval
    • Up to 6 years (max): Only in exceptional cases (e.g., medical issues, natural calamities), with Academic Committee approval
      • The Extensions cannot be granted retrospectively
      • Chief Guide must justify the delay and the present case to the Academic Committee
  • Cancellation Rules
    • If extension beyond 6 years is sought without valid reasons, Registration will be cancelled
    • If thesis is not submitted within:
      • 5½ years (normal extension) OR
      • 6 years (exceptional extension)Registration cancelled
  • Number of Seats: 02 (Two)
